At the castle in Lidzbark Warmiński you can admire the further effects of conservation works carried out as part of the project "Conservation and restoration of the fourteenth-century castle in Lidzbark Warmiński – pearls of Gothic architecture in Poland – stage II".
On Tuesday, December 8, 2015, the restoration of the walls and vaults of the 1st floor of the cloisters was completed. The results of the efforts of the group of conservators were adopted by a committee composed of representatives of the investor, the Provincial Conservator of Monuments, experts – specialists in the conservation of wall polychromes (Prof. Bogumiła Rouba – Nicolaus University of Culture in Toruń, Prof. Władysław Zalewski – Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Szymon Bakalarczyk – WKZ Olsztyn, Elżbieta Jelińska – director of WMiM, Leszek Natora – representative of the substitute investor, Anna Szymańska and Grzegorz Świętochowski – MWiM).
On the same day, a press conference was held with the participation of performers and experts cooperating with them (Marcin Kozarzewski, Ryszard Żankowski, Adam Szweda - Nicolaus University of Toruń, Jerzy Domasłowski - Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań). The results of conservation of antique furniture, also carried out as part of the project (Małgorzata Okulicz – MWiM in Olsztyn) were also presented.
An important element of the restoration of the paintings was the iconographic and artistic reconstruction of the depicted scenes on the walls of the cloisters – the results of the research were presented by Ryszard Żankowski, who cooperated with a group of conservators. Reconstructions of the paintings will be made available to visitors on the boards as part of the educational program related to the unique complex of medieval polychromes in the Lidzbark castle. The artistic provenance of the paintings was discussed by Dr. Jerzy Domasłowski, who connected the creators of the cloisters' painting decoration with artists from the Czech Republic, and attributed the foundation to Bishop Henry III Sorbom. The restoration of the paintings was also accompanied by the recognition and elaboration of historical graffiti – left by guests and residents of the Lidzbark castle. On the polychrome walls of the castle cloisters, about 140 different inscriptions and drawings were identified: 50 on the north wall, 40 on the south wall, 34 on the west, 21 on the eastern one. All of them have been examined and renovated.
Journalists also saw several renovated furniture – two baroque wardrobes, including a large hall wardrobe from the eighteenth century, which will be the decoration of the castle hall and a small sepet from the seventeenth century. They also learned about the scope of conservation work of the presented furniture based on photos. Małgorzata Okulicz also presented a discovery-curiosity – a letter found by the conservator of a wardrobe from the Lehndorff palace in Sztynort, written in the summer of 1838, left by a master carpenter who was renovating the object at that time.
Restoration works at the castle of the Warmian bishops will last until April next year. They include the renovation of roofs, conservation works of facades and turrets, modernization of the central heating and plumbing network, replacement of electrical and lightning protection installations, adaptation of basements for exhibition purposes. In addition to renovation and conservation works, the illumination of the castle will also be carried out, and in the renovated part of the cellars there will be an exhibition devoted to the construction history of the castle.
Funds for the implementation of the project come from Norwegian funds and funds of the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. The own contribution was provided by the local government of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
