"The castle comes to life" - an open day at the Lidzbark castle
as part of the project
"Conservation and restoration of the fourteenth-century castle in Lidzbark Warmiński pearls of Gothic architecture in Poland – ii stage"

On Saturday, July 18 this year, at noon, the courtyard of the Lidzbark castle was filled with guests. Very numerous residents of Lidzbark, the region and tourists came to participate in the event "The castle comes to life".
The guests were welcomed by Małgorzata Jackiewicz-Garniec, the head of the Warmia Museum, who acted as the host. The introduction to the next events of the day was to familiarize the audience with the elements of the conservation and revitalization project and information about creating the possibility of its implementation, thanks to co-financing from Norwegian and EEA funds and national funds. Then the guests were invited to actively participate in the attractions, learn the secrets of the Lidzbark castle.
The first element of the program was a meeting with "living images", i.e. the opportunity to participate in the life of characters associated with the residence of the Warmian bishops. Bishop Henryk Sorbom walked around the castle cloister, who talked about the paintings he founded and their subject matter. In the oratory, Bishop Łukasz Watzenrode spoke about his life and numerous artistic foundations. Nicolaus Copernicus, who lived in Lidzbark in the years 1503-1510, in the bishop's chambers talked about the secrets of the bishops' doctor and his work in Lidzbark. In the meeting room of the Lidzbark stronghold, King Sigismund Augustus again came. In the Great Refectory you could meet the first conservator of the castle, Karl Hauke, during a meeting before the next stage of work. All the characters transported the gathered to the past of the castle and allowed to look at its history from a different perspective. The meeting with "living images" was an opportunity to ask questions, commemorative photographs, and above all to understand the role that the Lidzbark castle played for centuries.
The next stage of the meeting was questing for individual players, families and peer groups. A specially prepared game card encouraged to actively and thoroughly get to know the castle. Correct answers to the questions – hidden in the castle rooms, at exhibits and exhibitions – had to be entered on the game card to complete the received text. Those who solved the puzzles in the shortest time received rewards.
In the castle courtyard, craft workshops were held, referring to the history of the stronghold. On the first floor, the spiritual, political and social life of the bishops took place, and the ground floor of the castle focused economic life. Guests could take part in workshops of traditional preparation and baking of bread. The castle kitchen came to life, offering the secrets of preparing and tasting poultry and egg dishes, which reigned on the daily bishop's table. A reconstruction of the so-called Lidzbark "vets", i.e. fruit afternoon teas prepared at the castle in the times of bishop Ignacy Krasicki, is presented.
The meeting was complemented by a show of court dances in the courtyard performed by the amateur dance ensemble of Małgorzata and Dariusz Wędrowski "Barok" from Bartoszyce. After the presentation, the team invited all comers to the barge tangs.
The culmination of the Saturday meeting "The Castle comes to life" was a concert of the Dances of Sleep band in the Great Refectory. The group presented contemporary music inspired by early music, which sounded great in the representative interior of the Castle.

On a hot Saturday afternoon, over three thousand guests passed through the Lidzbark castle. After the event, they left the castle full of impressions and very satisfied. They repeated that the open day at the Lidzbark castle showed this place as vibrant with life, and the title "living" took various forms. Great interest was aroused by historical "living paintings", court dances and a concert, guests leaving the castle were also very impressed by the design works carried out, renovated roofs, preserved southern façade and work on the cloister paintings.

The open day at the Lidzbark castle was part of the information and promotional activities of the project "Conservation and revitalization of the fourteenth-century castle in Lidzbark Warmiński – pearls of Gothic architecture in Poland – ii stage" implemented thanks to the support provided from Norwegian and EEA funds from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, funds from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the local government of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
