The Museum of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn is implementing the project "Rescue conservation works of the cloisters of the Lidzbark Castle". The project received funding from the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area and the Self-Government of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
The cloisters of the Lidzbark castle come from the last quarter of the fourteenth century, their unique feature are vaults with a triangular span with a triangular beam, the so-called jumping. On the walls and vaults of the cloisters there are gothic polychromes – figural and ornamental. On the eastern wall there are also painted coats of arms of Medici and Hozjusz from the third quarter of the sixteenth century and Lis (coat of arms of bishop Szymon Rudnicki) from the early seventeenth century). Weather conditions, dampness of the walls and mistakes made in the past by conservators cause the destruction of cloisters. This is a rapidly progressing process.
The first stage of the project involves conducting many studies, the results of which will prevent the destruction of cloisters, and in the future properly expose and preserve Gothic polychromes. Archaeological research was carried out within the courtyard. A photogrammetric inventory of the cloisters was also carried out, orthophotomaps and 3D scans of all elements covered by the work programme were developed. Probes and stratigraphic open-pits were made to determine the range of painting decorations on the walls and vaults of the cloisters.
